I am not a huge candy fan myself unless it comes from a store called See’s but my kids would eat it every day if I allowed them. I realize I was exactly like them when I was their age (bring me all the pixie sticks!) and so I need to give my kids some grace more often. They are surrounded by the temptation and convenience of sweets everywhere they look but they can’t always see the big picture of how their actions now will affect their bodies years down the road.
Here’s the thing. I know sugar is not favored by the body. I know the inflammation it causes that leads to a whole host of bad things and sicknesses. I wish I did not know that and I could just live in unknowing bliss…until my body started to rebel and shut down.
With this knowledge I have lessened WAY BACK the amount of sugar in our household but we are not cold turkey with sugar and likely will never be.
Am I working to help my kids like vegetables and try new foods? Yes!
Do we still make Gingerbread houses at Christmas? Yes!
I would not miss that special time with them. It has become a tradition for us, and as mom I still get to determine how much candy they put on their houses (and eventually in their mouth).
We love making graham cracker “gingerbread” houses. They are easy to make and you likely have all the ingredients in your house already! Click here to learn how to make your own!
